Use Advanced Options

Warning! Modifying these options can cause problems with existing baud rate options and result in non-functionality.

  1. From the initial Advanced screen, tap on Show Advanced Options to modify modem flow control properties or set a custom baud rate.
  2. The card selector window at the top of the page allows you to selectively change properties by card type (Single, Dual, Quad serial cards, etc.). Select the correct card.
  3. The next five entries allow you to change modem flow control properties. You can force DCD, CTS, DSR, DTR or RTS “ON” or “OFF”. This will allow you to over-ride the driver and force status signals to the remote device (DTR, RTS), or will allow you to ignore status from the remote device (DCD, CTS, DSR)
  4. You can set a custom baud rate, by selecting the Set Custom Baud Rate button. That will take you to the baud rate generation page.
  5. Use the Generate Custom Baud screen to create a new baud rate not listed in the To: field in the first Advanced screen. Baud Rates from 7 to 921 KBaud are possible. Select the Baud Rate by selecting the proper combination of Divisor and TDR values. Enter the Divisor and TCR and tap ok.
  6. Then tap Show Baud Rates. The custom baud rate will be highlighted in the right column with an asterisk (*). See How to Map Baud Rates to complete your baud rate mapping.
  7. Tap ok to finish.

Note: The new baud rate will not apply until you tap ok and exit the Hi-Speed COM Tools

Mapping Baud Rates Overview

Socket has created the Hi-Speed COM Tools to enable you to use your COM port at higher baud rates in applications that only let you choose a baud rate up to 115 kbps. In addition, it allows you to create and use non-standard baud rates (Advanced Options).

The program lets you use one of the available baud rate options listed in your application as a placeholder for a new baud rate of your choice. This is known as “mapping” a new baud rate to an available baud rate option.

For example, if you need your device to work at a baud rate of 230,400 bps, most Windows applications will not list 230,400 bps as a baud rate option. Hi-Speed COM Tools cannot change which options are listed, but it does let you program one of the existing options to work at 230,400 bps (e.g., You can change the “300” bps option to generate 230,400 bps).

Note:

View COM Port Assignment

Socket’s Hi-Speed COM Tools make it easy to check which COM port(s) are assigned to the serial I/O card.

  1. Insert the card into your mobile computer’s PC Card slot right-side up, with the label on top.

  2. Pocket PCs: Go to Start | Settings | Connections | Hi-Speed COM Tools.

HPCs: Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Hi-Speed COM Tools.

Note: If the Hi-Speed COM Tools icon does not appear, soft reset your mobile computer by pressing the reset button.

  3. Use the Ports screen (1st tab) to view the COM port Assignment(s). Port A will appear for S-I/O cards, Port A and B for D-I/O cards and Port A, B, C and D for Q-I/O cards.
OS Configuration for D-I/O

The OS Configuration tab is the optional third tab and will appear only if you are using one of the following D-I/O cards:

Revision “C” – “E” of the Ruggedized D-IO (with fixed cables)

Revision “H” – “J” of the Standard D-I/O (with removable cables)

The original drivers that came with these D-I/O versions required that the card be configured in either of two modes – Desktop Windows mode (for Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP) or windows CE mode – depending on the Windows version being used. The OS Configuration screen allows you to configure the D-I/O between these two modes. Straight from the package, these cards come in Desktop Windows mode and must be configured to Windows CE mode before you can use it with a Windows CE device.

Note: The new drivers included in this release do not require different OS configurations. The older D-I/O revisions listed above will not work with the new Hi-Speed drivers.

Important! You can only configure the card using a Windows CE-based mobile computer! You cannot configure the card using a notebook computer!

Follow these steps to configure the card:

  1. Pocket PC: Go to Start | Settings | System | Hi-Speed COM Tools.
HPC: Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Hi-Speed COM Tools.

Note: If the Hi-Speed COM Tools icon does not appear, soft reset your mobile computer by pressing the reset button.

  2. Tap on the OS Configuration tab.

  3. The OS Configuration screen will report which mode the card is in. Tap on the Change button.

  4. Note: The card can be configured to work with Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP, although the screen does not mention XP.

  5. The Caution screen will appear, warning you not to remove the card during the reconfiguration process. Tap OK.

  6. The reconfiguration process will begin. Leave the card inside the slot. The process will take several seconds.

  7. When reconfiguration is complete, the Configuration updated screen will appear. As directed, tap ok to close the window.

  8. Remove the card from your mobile computer. Use your computer’s card eject button.
How to Map Baud Rates

  2. Make sure that no serial ports are already open on your Windows CE device.

  3. Tap on the Advanced tab.

  4. In the drop-down menu at the top of the screen, select the appropriate Socket Serial I/O Card that you wish to map baud rates for. If you are using a multi-port card, select the appropriate Serial I/O Card and port.

  5. The From: field lists baud rate options that are available in typical Windows CE applications. Scroll to select a baud rate option that you would like to function at a new speed. Please note that after mapping a baud rate option to communicate at a new speed, the original speed will no longer be available unless you map baud rates back again.

  6. The To: field lists baud rates that are not available in typical Windows CE applications. Scroll to select your new speed.

Example: “300” is a baud rate option available in most Windows applications. If you are not using 300s baud in any of your applications, you can change the “300” option to work at 921600 baud instead. Afterwards, whenever you choose a baud rate of “300” in any of your applications, it will instead communicate at 921600 baud.

If you want to create and use a baud rate not in the To: list, go to the section on Advanced Options for instructions on creating a custom baud rate.

Note: The To: list includes a baud rate with an asterisk (*) that represents a custom baud rate. The number changes whenever you create a new custom baud rate.

  7. If you do not need to configure any advanced options, tap ok to finish.

Note: The new baud rate will not apply until you tap ok and exit the Hi-Speed COM Tools.

Determine the Maximum Baud Rate

Hi-Speed COM Tools Overview

Socket’s Hi-Speed COM Tools for Windows CE has two main screens, Ports and Advanced, and one optional screen, OS Configuration.

The Ports screen allows you to identify the COM port number(s) assigned to your Serial I/O Card (Single Serial: S-I/O, Dual Serial: D-I/O, and Quad Serial: Q-I/O).

You can use the Advanced screen to program your Windows CE device to work at non-standard baud rates (up to 921 kbps) not normally available in Windows CE applications.

The OS Configuration screen appears only when some older versions of the D-I/O are present (Rev H to J for D-I/O with Removable cables; Rev C to E for Ruggedized). The drivers for these card versions require that the D-I/O be configured in either of two modes – Desktop windows mode (for Windows 9x/Me/2000/XP) or Windows CE mode – depending on the Windows version you are using. The OS Configuration screen allows you to configure the D-I/O between these two modes.

Note: The new Hi-Speed drivers do not work with the older verison D-I/O cards.
